Stem Cell Interactive Assignment

In Pairs, Go to Stem Cell Interactive in links
Read the descriptions as you go

1)  Using the coaxing agents, stimulate the growth of different types of stem cells.
2)  List 6 different types of stem cells, their purpose, and uses in treatment.
3)  Draw and label the "tree" connecting" the different types of cells.
4)  Define "embryonic stem cell".

Turn it in with both of your names on it.

Happy Spring Break!

Many of you have submitted your Enzyme Lab to turnitin.com and have submitted either e-mailed or hard copies.  Keep them coming!  Also, remember that you can germinate some seeds over break to get an idea of what conditions might work best for you on that lab.  I strongly recommend that you do some preliminary trials early on so that you will have a greater chance of success when you perform the formal lab.

Enjoy your time off!

3/18-3/22

SPARK lecture this Monday 3/18 on engineering.  Replication/Transcription/Translation/Enzyme Test on Thursday.  Turn Enzyme Inquiry Lab in before Spring Break (or get it to me via e-mail by Sun 3/24).  Please also turn in a copy through turnitin.com.

  • Mon 3/18:  Notes on Enzymes.  Questions on Enzyme Lab?  Turn in Enzymes as Agents of Control if not already.  Graph and short conclusion required.
  • Tues 3/19:  Jeopardy Review for Replication/Transcription/Translation/Enzyme Test.  Work on Review Sheet to be turned in BEFORE the test on Thursday.
  • Thurs 3/21:  Turn in test review.  Take Test.  Start biotechnology.  Turn in Enzyme Lab.  Hand out Seed Germination Lab.  It is not going to be due until the 2nd week of May, but many of you might want to work on this over Spring Break if you are around since it has to be done at home and requires  vigilance over a number of days.

Enzyme Lab: Turn in before Spring Break or by Sun, 3/24

For this lab, please turn in a hard copy and submit via turnitin.com.  The class ID:  6240228 and password:  enzyme.  I will put up some instructions for signing in to turnitin.com.

What do you need for a full lab write-up?
1.  Focused Question
2.  Background
3.  Variables (identify the 3 types).  Sometimes students discuss how they controlled the variables here.
4.  Materials
5.  Procedure, remember the details!!  Include specific amounts, tools used, how you controlled variables.  Include what you are going to do to the data.
6.  Data table, has to have uncertainty and all of the usual things
7.  Data processing:  sample calculations, graphs, statistical tests where relevant
8.  Conclusion
9.  Evaluation

For more details on all of these, look at your IB Biology Survival Manual.

What should you know for the quiz on Thursday?

1.  Describe the process of replication using the following terms:  replication fork, leading strand, lagging strand, Okazaki fragments, 5’ to 3’ synthesis
2.    Names and functions of the 6 enzymes:  helicase, RNA primase, DNA polymerase III, DNA polymerase I, ligase, and RNA polymerase
3.   3 differences between DNA and RNA.
4.    Know the 3 stages of transcription and be able to describe them BRIEFLY
5.    Be able to describe the 3 modifications to RNA before it leaves the nucleus

3/4-3/14

SPARK Lecture this Monday (3/4)  on Computer Science.  Room 169 at 3:30 pm.

  • Mon 3/4:  Mutations in your name worksheet.  Use the genetic code to write your name and then investigate how it changes as it goes through various "mutations".
  • Tues 3/5:  Translation:  going from RNA to protein.  Overview of the whole process.   Start Enzyme Worksheet.
  • Thurs 3/7:  Short Quiz on Replication and Transcription.  Finish Enzyme Worksheet while each group does Transcription/Translation Simulation.  Introduce Enzyme Inquiry Lab.
  • Mon 3/11:  Try 3 different methods of measuring enzyme activity.
  • Tues 3/12:  "Messing Around Day" for Enzyme Inquiry Lab.  Do pre-write for Enzyme Inquiry Lab.  Hand out Review Sheet for test on replication/transcription/translation/enzymes.
  • Thurs 3/14:  Take data for Enzyme Inquiry Lab.  Full lab write-up due by Thursday 3/21 (extended to Sun 3/24).  Replication/Transcription/Translation/Enzyme Test next Thursday 3/21.
