Beginning of Second Semester


  • Wed 1/29:  Final Exams Back and Recollect.  Start the Immune System.  Barrier defenses and phagocytes.  Hand out Antibiotic Lab.  Read it for Friday and bring something to test for antibiotic properties.  Start Reading Chapter 43.
  • Fri 1/31:  Using sterile technique, spread bacteria on petri plates and then place 4 disks on your plate:  1 plain (control), 2 disks of the item of your choice, and one prepared (either ampicillin or streptomyocin).   Go over acquired immunity (B and T cells).  Read more of chapter 43.  Bring a prepared data table to record measurements of  "zones of inhibition" for all the plates in your class on Monday.  Lab report due Friday, February 14 in hard-copy form and through turnitin.com.  See details in post up above.
  • Mon 2/3:  Measure zones of inhibition for your plate and all the others in your class.  Be as consistent as you can and record any associated qualitative data (observations).  If time, continue with acquired immunity.  Quiz on Biochemistry and Properties of Water on Friday.
  • Wed 2/5:  Finish acquired immunity.  Monoclonal antibodies.  Passive and Active Immunity.  Blood clotting.  Computer simulation of making vaccinations.  Worksheet on Vaccinations and HIV/AIDS.  Read 43.3.
  • Fri 2/7:  Quiz on Properties of water and Biochemistry.  HIV/AIDS.   History, transmission, risk groups, treatment.  Read 43.4.
Remember to clear Wednesday, February 19th for the Group IV Project if you are testing in IB Biology this Spring and you did not do the project already (a few of you may have done it for IB Chem or IB Physics last year.  You know who you are!)

Back to School 2014!

I can't believe Winter Break is over, but alas, it is.  That's okay because 2014 is going to be a great year, the year that you graduate from high school and move on to exciting new things!

The deadline for late work and extra credit for this semester will be Friday, January 17th.  It is coming up fast, so please keep that in mind.


  • Mon 1/6:  Muscle Contraction Video and Muscle Contraction Worksheet.  Complete it for Wednesday.  Introduce Disease/Disorder Mini-Project.  Optional quiz on the bones of the human skeleton on Wed 1/8:
  • Wed 1/8:  Optional bone quiz.  Get Muscle Worksheet checked off.  More on muscle contraction.  Research for Disease/Disorder Project.
  • Fri 1/10:  Dissecting chicken wings.  More on muscles, tendons, ligaments.  With leftover time, work on project.
  • Mon 1/13:  Turn in wing dissection worksheet if not already.  Work on project.
  • Wed 1/15:  Disease/disorder projects due.  Walk around evaluation.  Review muscles and movement.
  • Fri 1/17:  Deadline for Late Work and Extra Credit for the Semester.  Muscle and Movement Quiz.  Review for Final Exam.
  • Mon 1/20:  MLK Day Holiday.  No School.
  • Tues 1/21:  Final Review before Final Exam.
  • Wed 1/22:  Finals:  Periods 1, 4, 7.
  • Thurs 1/23:  Finals:  Periods 2, 5, 8.
  • Fri 1/24:  Finals:  Periods 3, 6.

Last 2 Weeks Before Winter Break


  • Mon 12/9:  Cadaver Lab Field Trip!  Be in class by 11:40-11:45, so we can gather to leave.  Bring something to eat, your Tri-Met pass, and warm clothes.
  • Wed 12/11:  Class cancelled due to Snow Day.
  • Fri 12/13:  Feedback on Field Trip?  Check off Heart Worksheet.  Finish up Notes on the Circulatory System and start the Respiratory System.  Hand out Review Sheet for Digestion, Circulation, and Respiration.  Read 42.5-42.7
  • Mon 12/16:  SPARK Lecture on Brain Cancer today.  Finish Respiratory System and review the different systems.
  • Wed 12/18:  Review for Digestion, Circulation, and Respiration Test to take on Friday.
  • Fri 12/20:  Turn in Review.  Take Test.  Turn in Populations Lab (a hard copy) and a virtual copy through turnitin.com.  If you do not have it to turn in today, please e-mail me a copy AND submit through turnitin.com by December 29th (printing a good copy from turnitin.com is frequently a challenge, but almost always works well from e-mailed documents).  Work on Muscles and Movement Worksheet (see in documents).   The front part goes along with the Muscles Video linked on this site.

The Week of 12/2-12/6

I hope you are enjoying your week off from school!  Remember that you need to finish the "Joe Eats a Burger" data table for Mon 12/2 and you should have a research question and plan for data taking for the Populations Lab (see documents if you don't have it) by Wed 12/4.  Also remember to get your Cadaver Field Trip form signed by 12/4.


  • Mon 12/2:  Turn in Joe eats a burger.  Notes on villi and microvilli.  Overview of digestive enzymes.  Start Circulatory System worksheet.  Quiz on components of the heart and blood flow on Friday.  Finish reading Chapter 41 and start 42.
  • Wed 12/4:  Turn in Cadaver Field Trip Form.  Turn in research plans for Populations Inquiry.  Blood flow through the heart.  Include chambers of the heart, valves, important vessels.  Difference between arteries, veins, and capillaries. Complete Circulatory Worksheet and get it checked off.  Quiz on Friday. Read 42.2 and 42.3.
  • Fri 12/6:  Quiz on components of the heart and blood flow.  Components of blood and blood clotting.   Other topics on circulation.    Read 42.4.

The Week of 11/18-11/22 (Digestion Notes have been added)

SPARK Lecture on Cell Membranes on Monday!  Quiz on the Digestive System on Friday.


  • Mon 11/18:  Hand out Cadaver Lab Field Trip form.  Please get signed by Mon 12/2.  Introduction to the Digestive System.  Parts of the system.  What happens to food as it goes through.  Color diagram of digestive system.  Start reading Chapter 41.
  • Wed 11/20:  More on digestive system, including the function of enzymes.  Start on villi.  Finish coloring digestive system and complete back of worksheet using computers.
  • Fri 11/22:  Quiz on digestive system.  Be able to label the structures in a diagram and be able to describe what happens to food as it passes through, using correct terminology.  Finish the structure and function of villi and microvilli.
Have a relaxing week off!  You can get ahead by starting to read Chapter 42 on the circulatory system.  You can also get going on an extra credit book if you would like.  Check the book list and instructions under "Extra Credit Opportunities".
