SPARK Lecture!

The first SPARK lecture of the school year will be Monday, October 7 at 3:30 in Room 169. The speaker is Dr. Kathleen Dalke, ObGyn. Please come and learn about her work and earn some extra credit for your science class!

9/30-10/10

• Mon 9/30:  Turn in Field Trip Assignment.  Ecology Data-Based Question Practice.  Use Markscheme to grade.  Questions on Ecology Review?  Pick up Beak of the Finch.  First quiz on Chapters 1-3 on Tuesday 10/8.  Ecology Review due before test on Wednesday.
• Wed 10/2:  Turn in Ecology Review.  Take Ecology Test. Significant Figures practice.  Basics of Darwinian evolution.  Read 22.1 and 22.2.
• Fri 10/4:  Evidence of evolution:  animal breeding, antibiotic resistance, industrial melanism.  Graphing practice using LoggerPro.  Remember the Beak of the Finch quiz on Tuesday.  Read 22.3.
• Tues 10/8:  Beak Quiz #1 on Chapters 1-3.  Origin of Life.  Read 25.1 and 25.3.  Next Beak Quiz (Chapters 4-6) on Tues 10/15.
• Thurs 10/10:  Finish origin of life.  Speciation, gene pools, and barriers between gene pools. Read 24.1 and 24.2.  Quiz on Chapters 4-6 on Tues, 10/15.

The Weeks of 9/16-9/27

• Mon 9/16:  Turn in Climate Change Packet if not already.  Simpson's Diversity Index calculation.  Testing water for dissolved oxygen, dissolved carbon dioxide, and pH.  Finish field tests if necessary.  Turn in weather worksheet.  Read 55.4.
• Wed 9/18:  Soil Tests.  Climate Change Notes.   Carbon Cycle (will do later). 
• Fri 9/20:  Signed Field Trip formed due.  Sorting macroinvertebrates and using the count to determine water quality.  Turn in Biotic Factors worksheet.  Population growth curves.  (will do later)
• Mon 9/23:  Gather materials for the field trip, pack, and label for your group.  Go over Field Trip activities.
• Wed 9/25:  Field Trip Day!  Gather in class by 9:50.  When we are all assembled, we will take the materials we packed and load them onto the bus.  The school bus will leave by 10:00 am.  We should return by 1: 45 pm.  You should have packed a lunch, water, and snacks if needed.
• Fri 9/27:  Debrief field trip.  Enter field trip data into database.  Field Trip Assignment due on Monday!  Go over Carbon Cycle and Population Growth Curves.  Review ecology concepts for test next Wednesday 10/2.

Beginning of the 2013-2014 School Year

  Welcome back for the 2nd year of IB Biology! By now you have seen the 2nd year time-line and know what we will cover this year. During the 2nd semester of this year, we will continue to cover new material, but also go back and review material from last year. In addition, we will do 2-3 more labs that can be used as part of your IB Internal Assessment. 
•  Wed 9/4: 2nd year time-line. Hand out Safety and Academic Honesty Contracts. Please get them signed by Wed 9/11. 
•  Fri 9/6: Hopes and Concerns for 2nd year. Ecology preassessment. Ecology overview. Basic definitions. Autotrophs and Heterotrophs. Types of heterotrophs. Read 52.1 and skim 52.2. Read 54.2. 
•  Mon 9/9: Table groups make food chains. Food web simulation. Each group make a food web. 
•  Wed 9/11: Signed Safety and Academic Honesty Contracts due signed. Energy pyramids. On-line Climate Change Activity. Read 55.3 and 55.5. 
•  Fri 9/13: Discuss Climate Change. Carbon Cycle. Population dynamics. Read 55.4 and skim 53.

End of the Year: Deadline for Late Work/Extra Credit on Monday 6/10!

Sorry for no update last week, although there wasn't much except Plant Test on Monday and review the rest of the week.  Now all we have left is the Final Exam!  Some details about the final:

1)  It will be for the 2nd semester only (topics are Genetics, Replication, Transcription, Translation, Enzymes, Biotech, and Plants)
2)  It will be 20% of the semester grade
3)  It will be a combination of multiple choice, short responses, and longer responses (like most of our tests)
4)  Cheating will result in a 0 (not partial credit).  Don't do it.
5)  Exam for 1st period is Wednesday at 8:10 and Exam for 2nd period is Thursday at 8:10 (2 hours).  You must finish in the time allotted unless you have an IEP/504 giving you extra time.

5/13-5/23

• Mon 5/13:  Notes on Flowers.  Hand out Hoyt Arboretum Field Trip Permission Slip.  Read 38.1.
• Tues 5/14:  Finish notes on flowers:   monocots vs. dicots.  Flower Dissection. Read 38.2.
• Thurs 5/16:  Notes on Plant Hormones.  Auxin, Phytochromes, Gibberellin.  Videos on Plant Pollinators.  Bring your Field Trip Permission Slip signed by Monday!!  Read 39.2 and 39.3
• Mon 5/20:  SPARK Lecture today on Ground Water Quality (3:30 in 169).  Signed Permission Slip due.  Recognizing plants in Hoyt Arboretum.  
• Tues 5/21:  Get to class as soon as possible.  Come prepared for all weather and bring your Tri-Met bus pass!
• Thurs 5/23:  Incredible video on plants!!  Answer video notes and turn in.  Hand out Plant Review.  Plant Test on Thursday, 5/30.  Test moved to Monday 6/3.  Begin writing answers to the review.

4/29-5/10

Remember that the Seed Germination Lab is due Thursday, May 16th!  You need to get your data taken soon so that you can complete the write-up on time!

• Mon 4/29:  Brainstorm plant questions, share with small group, and then share out with large group.
• Tues 4/30:  Plant origins and roots.  Leaf worksheet.  Answer questions on side 1 and color side 2.  Get checked off.  Skim Chapter 29.
• Thurs 5/2:  Notes on stems.  Gather plant parts in the Lincoln Yard.  Get 10 different leaves, 3 roots and 3 stems.  In the classroom, draw 5 leaves, 2 roots, and 1 stem.  Label all the parts that you can and then write a caption describing the features of each sample (color, texture, where it was found, special features).  Read 35.1.
• Mon 5/6:  Notes on plant growth.  Finish drawings and turn in.  Read 35.2-35.4.
• Tues 5/7:  Water transport in plants.  Transpiration.  Adaptations of Xerophytes.  Start short transpiration lab.  Read 36.1-36.4.
• Thurs 5/9:  Plant reproduction:  flowers. Monocots vs. Dicots.  Read 38.1-38.2 (move to next week).  Transport in phloem.  Compare xylem and phloem.  Finish transpiration lab from Tuesday.  On-line transpiration simulation.  There is a hand-out on this website and a link to the site on this website.  For people who were here, the assignment is due Tuesday, 5/14 and for students with excused absences or taking IB tests, the assignment is due Monday 5/20.
